Time of day: Sunset
Octobeer 31, 2010
This scene is found along highway 168 (on the western side of the sierras) near a community called Shaver Lake. I photographed the area about 5 years ago and resolved to return the next fall before the nearby Aspens were past their peak. Well, that didn't happen the next year or this year for that matter. See http://contador.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Misc-Practice-Shots/4643097_w89Ne#381322383_maTzu for a 2005 image made here.
I arrived in the area a couple of hours before sunset, took a few exposures and realized I needed to let the light moderate. So I went on to another spot that I have always wanted to capture during Autumn. See http://contador.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Central-California-Scenery/774689_nyyYJ#60609988_UbJQz . It turns out that I was too early to photograph from this area since all of the foliage was still mostly green.
When I returned to Ockenden Ranch this scene is what I found.
In this image the reflections on the water were initially as bright as the surrounding foliage making the image much too busy. So I darkened the reflections which toned them down and helped bring the image into balance.
I just love the colors here and the way the scene comes together neatly.
